Day One Recap – March 16, 2023

What. A. First. Day. But did you expect any less?

While last year saw six upsets on the first night, 2023 brought on four upsets… but a couple of huge ones. Out of the four upsets that took place (Furman, Princeton, Auburn and Penn State), only two entrants got them all right. 5-year veteran Collins Lohmann who sits in second place and 6-year veteran Henry Pilar who is in 511th place.

Of the 16 games that took place, only three people managed to go 14-of-16 on day one. The first is Greg Williams who sits in first place with 15.5 points. This is Greg’s first time ever at the top of the leaderboard which is a long time coming for the 16-year veteran who has participated in every year of the pool. This is also his second top ten appearance during the course of the tournament. Greg’s last time was over ten years ago, when he had a bracket in fourth place on March 17, 2012.

The other two entrants to go 14-16 are 8-year veteran Ishmael Robinson and 7-year veteran Tom Gangel. Both sit tied for second at 15.5 points with the aforementioned Lohmann.

In our Survivor Pool, we started the day with 43 people. At the end of the night, only 37 made it through. Virginia and Arizona each caused two knockouts while Texas A&M and West Virginia brought on the other two.

For our Family Pool, hopefully you noticed we have changed it up as of last year. We are doing two divisions of families; those with 4-6 members and another division with 7-9 family members. After much research of past years, it looked as though larger families typically won the sidepot so we split it up.

At the current moment, The Nugent family leads the charge for the 4-6 division and in the 7-9 division, The Millers lead the way. Here’s something interesting, The Nugent and The Miller both lead the way after day one last year.

In Couple Up, Tom and Rose Gangel lead the charge.
